At the Tables
You never know who you're going to end up sitting across from at a game
of poker. Whether you're playing at a friendly get together, the local
casino, or in an online poker room, the styles of play and poker
personalities will come in all forms.
Some players are very careful with their chips. They will stack them up
and keep them in perfect piles, carefully pulling from their stacks
exact numbers that suit their level of confidence. They will consider
their calls carefully and rare will be the moments when they make a bold
raise. You know that when these types of players bet, the time to fold
has arrived. Even persistent calling by these players can sometimes be
a sign of a pretty decent hand. One good thing about the tight player
is that they should be quite susceptible to the bluff.
A tight player with a middling hand will not generally stay in a hand
where it costs a lot to remain. They prefer to wait for the perfect
hand to make their strike, but more often than not, by the time this
moment arrives, everyone knows they have a good hand and he will fail to
make the score he's waited for.
The opposite of this is the loose player. This player wants to see the
flop no matter what it costs him. He doesn't even require a solid look
at the cards he's dealt because he feels, correctly, that any too cards
have a chance of winning. The problem for this player is that certain
pairs of cards have less of a chance to win than others and they play
them all the same. You want to be careful with these guys. Bluffing
will be to your detriment. These players hate to fold as they are
always holding out hope that their card will come and save the day.
These players can make you rich if you wait for just the right hand.
This is the player you want at your table.
The best players at the table are those that consider their opponents
and adjust accordingly. Poker is a game of observation, intuition, and
calculations. It takes a well rounded player to navigate a game of
mixed skills and styles and come out on top. Luck will often play a key
role in any poker game, but more often than not, the player with the
greatest skill will be the one dragging the pot.
